Matt Damon’s ‘Elysium’ to Take Off in Imax Aug. 9

Sony is partnering with Imax releasing director Neill Blomkamp‘s effects-ladden sci-fi pic, “Elysium,” on Aug. 9. The Matt Damon starrer will be digitally re-mastered for the large-screen format.

The film’s Imax bow fits squarely into the company’s mantra of fanboy-driven releases.

“Neill Blomkamp is the kind of innovative, creative storyteller that moviegoers seek out, and we are thrilled to bring this highly anticipated film to Imax audiences worldwide,” said Greg Foster, who recently was promoted to CEO of Imax Entertainment and senior exec VP of Imax Corp.

Prior to “Elysium,” Imax will release Warner Bros.-Legendary Pictures’ alien-robot battle pic, “Pacific Rim,” which bows Friday. The mega-screen exhib last released “Man of Steel.”

“Elysium,” which co-stars Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley, takes place on a futuristic Earth, where most citizens toil in poverty, while only the rich live on a sustainable, highly pristine man-made space station. Sony has been careful marketing the film not to peak with audience interest too early. The studio only recently released an action-packed extended trailer.

“Elysium” will have nearly a month in Imax before the company’s next release, Universal’s “Riddick,” bows on Sept. 6.
