Marvel’s Black Panther Finds Screenwriter

It looks like there’s finally some progress to report on Marvel’s long-awaited ‘Black Panther,’ as The Wrap break the news that Joe Robert Cole is in talks to write the screenplay.

Marvel would seem to be betting heavily on Cole delivering the goods here, as reportedly there are no directors in line for the 2018 movie at present, and the studio does not intend to reach out to any until Cole’s script is complete.

Cole - also rumoured to have had a crack at the ‘Inhumans’ script - is a member of Marvel’s in-house writer’s room, which also includes Nicole Perlman, the original writer of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ who is currently co-writing ‘Captain Marvel’ with Meg LaFauve.

Cole is also a director himself, having made 2011 film ‘Amber Lake,’ but there is no indication that he is in contention to direct ‘Black Panther.’

However, The Wrap do imply that Cole has been hired at least in part on account of being African-American, and Marvel are also said to be targeting specifically black directors for their first black superhero solo movie.

Recently Ava DuVernay was known to be in talks for taking the film, but ultimately declined, whilst another rumoured contender F Gary Gray now looks set to direct the eighth ‘Fast & Furious’ movie, likely ruling him out.

Beyond this, little is confirmed about ‘Black Panther’ aside from the presence of Chadwick Boseman - who will debut in next year’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’ - in the title role as T’Challa, prince of Wakanda.

Andy Serkis is also expected to reprise his ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ role as Ulysses Klaw, but rumours that Ernie Hudson might also star as T’Challa’s father T’Chaka remain unconfirmed.

We await plenty more news on the matter between now and ‘Black Panther’s July 2018 release.
