After joining Empire for its second season, the Oscar winner is reportedly the first choice to play Aunt May in the Spider-Man reboot.

Sources told Variety that an offer was made late last week, but did not confirm how far along they were in the negotiating process.

The role, previously played by Golden Globe winner Rosemary Harris and two-time Oscar winner Sally Field, is that of Peter Parker's aunt, who, along with her husband, Uncle Ben, raise Peter after his parents abandon him. Aunt May is left as a widow when Uncle Ben is murdered, which ultimately incites Peter to lead a life of crime-fighting.

If the deal is sealed, Tomei will join Tom Holland in the movie. The British actor and dancer, best known for his title role in Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, was announced as the new Spider-Man last month.

In addition to her recurring Empire role as Mimi Whiteman, a demanding venture capitalist who gets entangled in the Lyon family drama, Tomei will soon be seen alongside Amy Schumer in Trainwreck, which hits theaters on Friday.
