Magnolia Picks Up Big Star Documentary
Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired the North American rights to Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me. The distributor plans a theatrical release of the documentary about the influential 1970s band later this year. Big Star was formed in 1971 in Memphis by former Box Tops lead singer Alex Chilton and Chris Bell. Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel filled out the original lineup. While the band never achieved mainstream success, it became a big influence on the likes of REM, the Flaming Lips and more. After breaking up in the md-’70s, Chilton reformed the band with Stevens for several years in the 1990s; Chilton passed away in 2010 just before the band was scheduled to play SXSW. Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me was directed by Drew DeNicola and Oliva Mori. It’s produced by Mori and Danielle McCarthy,executive produced by John Fry with Gill Holland and David Armillei, and co-produced by Brian Sprouse. Magnolia SVP Acquisitions Dori Begley negotiated the deal with Josh Braun of Submarine.
