Korea Box Office: ‘Mad Max’ Wins Holiday Weekend

BUSAN—“Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Spy” dominated the Korean box office over the three-day Buddha’s Birthday holiday weekend.

“Mad Max” bounced to top spot, earning $7.75 million from 954,000 admissions between Friday and Monday. It has amassed $17.2 million from 2.12 million admissions after two weekends on release. With strong average weekend occupancy rates and good advance ticket sales, the Warner Bros release looks set to continue strongly into its third week.

U.S. action comedy “Spy” opened in second-placed on Thursday (21 May) and earned $6.63 million from 903,000 admissions between Thursday and Monday. The top two films accounted for 53% of total revenue between Friday and Monday.

Last week’s number one, the noir thriller “The Chronicles of Evil” dropped to third place, earning $4.28 million and expanding its total to $12.9 million after two weekends.

Opening on Thursday, local newcomer “The Treacherous” took fourth in its first weekend, after briefly toppling the chart on the opening day. The sexy costume drama managed $4.54 million over five days.

“The Avengers: Age of Ultron” took fifth place, adding $1.85 million and pushing its total to $80.47 million from 10.4 million admissions after five weekends on release.

DreamWorks Animation’s “Home” opened sixth, earning $1.65 million in five days.

The Cannes Critics’ Week title “Coin Locker Girl” dropped to seventh, earning $83,500 over the four days. Released on 29 April, the film has totaled $10.97 million.
