‘King Jack’, ‘TransFatty Lives’ Take Top Audience Honors At Tribeca Film Festival
King Jack, a coming of age story about a 15-year old delinquent, and TransFatty Lives, a doc about a New York City DJ’s battle with ALS, respectively took the best narrative and documentary audiences awards at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The winners were announced at the fest’s wrap party and each award comes with a $25K cash prize.
Directed and written by Felix Thompson, King Jack stars Charlie Plummer as Jack, a teenager who is in the throes of dealing with a bully, summer school and his runty cousin in a rundown small town during a hazy summer weekend. In TransFatty Lives, directed by Patrick O’Brien, NYC disc jockey Transfatty contemplates life and death after he’s diagnosed with ALS and told he has two to five years to live.
Additionally as part of the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Awards program, King Jack receives “Rockets Over the Delta” (Mass MoCA #218), courtesy of Stephen Hannock, and TransFatty Lives receives “Taliban Relief Painting,” courtesy of Piers Secunda.
“The awards go to two powerful and charming stories of young men facing their deepest fears and overcoming their own challenges, Tribeca Film Festival director Genna Terranova said in a statement released with the awards. “These fiction and non-fiction stories of triumph and resilience clearly resonated with audiences this year.”
The runners-up were Andy Schocken and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Song of Lahore for the doc audience award and Lesly Headland’s Sleeping With Other People for the narrative audience award. Song of Lahore, which had its world premiere at the fest, documents musicians in the Pakistani city of Lahore who struggle to continue their life’s work following the Islamization of Pakistan. They eventually attracted listeners from around the world.
Sleeping With Other People stars Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie as former college chums who are notorious serial cheaters. They run into each other at a sex addicts meeting 10 years later and swear that their relationship will remain strictly platonic. Amanda Peet, Adam Scott, and Natasha Lyonne also star. IFC Films picked up Sleeping With Other People after its Sundance Film Festival premiere for mid-seven figures.
Audience award winners and runners-up will screen tomorrow, Sunday April 26 at Regal Battery Park Stadium 11, along with the winners selected by the TFF Jury. Below is the schedule:
