ABC is developing The Jury, a drama project written by Justified writer-producer VJ Boyd and Mark Bianculli (MTV pilot Self Promotion) and executive produced by CSI alumna Carol Mendelsohn. The project, from Sony Pictures TV, where Mendelsohn is under an overall deal, landed at ABC with a significant penalty. While the network is stopping short of categorizing it as a put pilot, I hear the size of the penalty is in a high-six-figure range that regularly qualifies as a “put.”

The Jury examines “the ultimate social experiment” that happens thousands of times a day in the U.S.: a person’s fate is placed in the hands of 12 strangers. The series follows a single murder trial a season as seen through the eyes of the individual jurors, exploring the biases and experiences that influence the jurors’ judgment, and how their preconceptions change along the way. Boyd executive produces with Carol Menselsohn Prods’ Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz; Bianculli co-executive produces.

Mendelsohn recently landed her first series order since moving to Sony TV for drama Game Of Silence at NBC. She, Boyd and Bianculli are repped by WME. Boyd is managed by Plattform, Bianculli by Anonymous Content.
