Jay-Z's 'Magna Carta Holy Grail' Hits No. 1 -- Without Help From Samsung

Jay-Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart Wednesday -- and the rapper did not even need Samsung's help to get there.

Samsung had previously pre-purchased one million digital copies of Sean Carter's new album, which eventually certified the record as platinum, following timely rule changes by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The No. 1 effort is Jay-Z's 13th, which brings him closer to the all-time record of 19 by the Beatles.

The 527,000 unrelated copies that Jay-Z's album registered last week were plenty to top the charts by themselves. It was the second-biggest debut of 2013, behind Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience."

"Magna Carta Holy Grail" also broke the previous U.S. Spotify streaming-record with 14 million streams.
