Japan Box Office: ‘Ted 2’ Jostles With ‘Jurassic World’ For Top Spot

TOKYO — “Ted 2” jostled with “Jurassic World” at the top of the Japanese box office for the Aug 29-30 weekend.

With Toho-Towa distributing, the film earned $3.6 million on 308,000 admissions, giving it the top spot in a country where chart positions are typically measured by admissions numbers.

The gross was a 36% improvement on the opening by the first “Ted” film, which finished with $35 million in 2012. Including its Friday release takings “Ted 2”’s three-day total was $4.7 million from 400,000 admissions.

Three-week box office leader “Jurassic World,” which is also handled by Toho-Towa, slipped to second place with 301,000 admissions.

But with higher ticket prices coming from its 3D versions, “Jurassic World” outgrossed “Ted 2” with $3.9 million over the Aug 29-30 weekend.

This boosted its cumulative total to $58 million or JPY7 billion from 4.75 million tickets. The last foreign live-action film to pass the JPY7 billion milestone was “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” in 2011.

Third was Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” which took $2.1 million on 190,000 admissions, running its total to $33 million from nearly 3 million tickets. The film now looks certain to end its run north of $50 million.
