Japan B.O.: ‘Hero’ Wins Second Weekend

TOKYO — “Hero,” the second feature entry in a long-running TV/film franchise centering on a rebellious public prosecutor played by Takuya Kimura, won its second straight weekend at the Japanese box office.

For the July 24-25 frame “Hero” earned $2.99 million on 271,000 admissions. This was about half its take for its opening weekend — the biggest of any live-action domestic film released in Japan so far this year. Produced by Fuji TV and distributed by Toho, “Hero” had a cumulative total of $15 million from 1.45 million admissions by its ninth day in theaters.

Meanwhile, last week’s number two, “The Boy and the Beast,” another Toho release, held onto its spot in the chart, with $2.74 million. By Monday (July 27), it had reached a total of $20 million on admissions of 1.9 million.

Disney’s “Inside Out” moved up one slot from fourth to third, with earnings of $2.97 million on 240,000 admissions, pushing it past the 1 million ticket sales mark.
