Jake Tapper Named ‘State Of The Union’ Anchor At CNN

Jake Tapper has been named anchor of CNN’s Sunday Beltway show State Of The Union.

He will take over the program in June, replacing Candy Crowley, who stepped down in December; various CNN talent have filled in since.

Tapper will continue as CNN’s chief Washington correspondent and the anchor of weekday afternoon newscast The Lead.

Tapper’s not new to the gig, having served as interim anchor of Sunday Beltway show This Week in 2010 when he was at ABC News. He joined CNN in 2013.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this election season and the new platform I will have at CNN to cover it,” Tapper said in a statement. “State Of The Union has a rich tradition and I hope to not only build on its history but expand the definition of what a Sunday show can be.”

Zucker announced Tapper’s appointment during CNN’s editorial conference call this morning, the network reported.

“He has the perfect combination of skills that make him uniquely qualified — he’s a relentless reporter, a gifted storyteller, and a terrific interviewer who doesn’t stop until he gets answers,” Zucker said in a statement.

The Sunday Beltway Show genre is churning madly these days and the ratings crown may be up for grabs. CNN’s announcement comes days after Bob Schieffer announced he’ll step down as anchor of the most watched Sunday Beltway show, CBS’s Face The Nation. NBC News went through its own drama late last year when David Gregory was ousted as anchor of Meet The Press while he was on vacation, and after weeks of emphatic denial it was in the works, he was replaced by Chuck Todd.
