A.R. Rahman Turns Film Producer
LONDON – Superstar Indian composer A.R. Rahman, winner of two Oscars, a brace of Grammys, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” is turning multihyphenate.
Rahman has struck a deal with distributor and financier Eros Intl. to co-produce and score a feature film that he has written. A director and cast are yet to be announced. Rahman will co-produce via his YM Movies shingle that has produced the musicvideos “Infinite Love” and “Changing Seasons.”
While details of the film’s plot are yet to be revealed, Rahman said that he came up with the idea during several long flights between India and Los Angeles. The composer has bases in Chennai, London and L.A.
The ‘Jai Ho’ composer also received Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Boyle’s “127 Hours.” A superstar at home long before “Slumdog Millionaire” Rahman has won all of India’s composing awards on multiple occasions.
Rahman debuted in 1992, composing songs and the score for “Roja,” for which he won both the Filmfare and National Award. The film’s music was listed in Time magazine’s 10 Best Soundtracks of All Time in 2005.
In all, he has composed 133 soundtracks. Besides his numerous scores for Indian films, Rahman’s western credits include “Water,” “Couple’s Retreat” and “People Like Us.” Forthcoming releases include “Million Dollar Arm,” “Paani” and “Mumbai Musical.”
Rahman has also scored the stage productions “Lord of the Rings” and “Bombay Dreams” and is set to collaborate with Andrew Lloyd Webber on a film version of “Dreams.”
