‘The Island With Bear Grylls’ Ratings Rise, ‘The Whispers’ Falls, ‘SYTYCD’ Even

As America prepares to slip into a hopefully relaxing Independence Day holiday weekend, American Ninja Warrior (1.9/7) pumped it up a bit last night to the tune of a 6% rise among adults 18-49. While no big shakes unto itself, that bop upwards does come after a sluggish return for the competition series last week. The flex matched ANW in the top spot for the highest-rated show of the night among the demo with slot rival The Bachelorette (1.9/7), which dipped 5% from its June 22 show. With the biggest week-to-week uptick, the 10% rise for NBC’s 10 PM freshman offering of The Island With Bear Grylls (1.1/4) helped the net win the summer Monday night. NBC was tops in both in the key demo with a 1.6/6 rating and in viewers with 5.6 million watching.

ABC’s 10 PM drama offering was not so fortunate as its Island rival. Five weeks into its run, newbie The Whispers (0.8/3) took a 20% face plant among the 18-49 last night from last week. In preliminary numbers, that’s the Steven Spielberg EP’d Ray Bradbury adaptation’s lowest performance so far.

Matching its June 22 season low, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (0.9/3) did not have much lift in its step last night, coming in well behind its 8 – 10 PM competitors. In fact, the network was in step with a repeat-filled CBS, with both getting that 0.9/3 rating overall. The only original on The CW last night was a special burn-off broadcast of Cedric’s Barber Battles (0.2/1), which was even with the show’s last original of May 1.
