Independent Box Office: 'Place Beyond the Pines' Passes $20M

"Place Beyond the Pines" this weekend became the first independent movie to cross $20 million this year.

The crime drama from Focus Features, starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, added $284,584 from 317 theaters in its eighth week. Its overall domestic take is $20.6 million.

Writer-director's Derek Cianfrance's film, which had a production budget of $15 million, has added another $14 million from overseas, so its worldwide gross is up to $34.4 million.

The weekend's biggest opener among specialty films was easily IFC Films' "Frances Ha." The Noah Baumbach-directed film -- which stars and was co-written by Greta Gerwig -- took in $134,000 from four theaters for a $33,500 pre-screen average.

That total is a little behind the opening of "Greenberg," the 2010 dark comedy on which Baubach and Gerwig teamed. That one, which co-starred Ben Stiller, averaged $39,384 from three theaters in its debut..

Roadside Attractions' Matthew McConaughey drama "Mud" took in $2.1 million from 960 theaters to raise its overall domestic total to $11.5 million after six weeks.

Roadside's Sarah Polley's documentary about her family, "Stories We Tell," took in $136,820 from 23 theaters in its second week, for an impressive $5,960 per-screen average.
