"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" continued its completely expected domination of the global box office, adding $16 million to its haul from overseas markets.

Analysts expect the film to gross in the $100 million range stateside, which would shatter the December record of $77.2 million set by 2007's "I Am Legend."

The film is directed by Jackson and stars Ian McKellen as the wizard, Gandalf, and Martin Freeman as the titular hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

Overseas, top territories included the United Kingdom ($3.4 million), Germany ($2 million), South Korea ($1.2 million) and France ($1.2 million).

New Line and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer co-produced and co-financed the film.
