Hey, Cowboys! Iconic Texas Ranch Hitting Market for $725M
You’ve heard the saying, “Everything is bigger in Texas.” The Waggoner Ranch in northern Texas is no exception.
The 510,000-acre working ranch was established in 1849 by famed cowboy Dan Waggoner, but now it’s up for grabs, and it has a Texas-sized price tag of $725 million.
According to CNN Money, the ranch, which is spread across nearly 800 square miles, has been in the same family for all of its 166 years. Despite its mammoth size, it’s being sold as one piece. Dallas-based realtor Bernard Uechtritz of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty said the ranch will not be broken up.
“There are too many interested people who would like to keep it as one piece,” Uechtritz told CNN Money, noting that he’s received more than 500 inquiries from across the nation and around the world.
So, what will the $725 million price tag get you? In addition to 510,527 acres of fields, rolling hills, creeks, rivers and several huge lakes, the sale also includes two main headquarter compounds, 20 cowboy camps, 14,000 head of cattle, a breeding operation for American quarter horses, abundant wildlife, and more than 1,000 producing oil wells.
About 26,000 acres of the ranch are cultivated farmland that produce wheat, oats and hay, CNN Money noted. The ranch employs about 120 workers.
Waggoner Ranch is being sold because the trust that manages it is being liquidated.
According to CBS, the ranch heirs have squabbled over the future of the ranch for years. “Faced with a requirement in their ancestor’s trust that could have forced a property auction,” they agreed to sell.
