Here’s Why Tom Holland Was Cast As Spider-Man

It’s no secret that Tom Holland has swung into action as Marvel’s next big screen Spider-Man… but why did he land the coveted role?

During an interview with The L.A. Times, Marvel boss Kevin Feige explained exactly why they chose Tom Holland to be the next Peter Parker.

“Well, you see the casting right away”, he said. “He’s younger by, I think five or six or seven or eight years than either Tobey [Maguire] or Andrew [Garfield] when they were cast, and that’s very intentional.”

Of course, it was rumoured for some time that Marvel and Sony were looking for a younger Spider-Man to replace Andrew Garfield – the shortlist including some of Hollywood’s finest young talent.

And there’s a good reason for that – Marvel is particularly keen to bring the character back to its comic book roots.

“You look at the early comic books of Spider-Man and what was so great about what Stan Lee and Steve Ditko did was they said: what if one of the most powerful heroes we have is a high school kid who also has to do homework and isn’t a billionaire, or isn’t a genius scientist, or isn’t a trained assassin, or isn’t another scientist who had an accident but is a kid?”

Unfortunately, Feige didn’t comment on Tom Holland’s acrobatic ability – but a recently revealed video already showcases what he can do. And it certainly gives us high hopes for our next Peter Parker.

But how will this new Spider-Man fit into the rapidly-expanding MCU?

It’s clear that Marvel is keen to shift the focus back to the young, teenage exploits of the early comic book Spider-Man. But with a cameo in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ coming up, I wonder just how they’re going to balance the youthful charm of a younger Spider-Man with the far more hefty storyline of ‘Civil War’.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see. But it looks as though Marvel has it all planned out.

The new ‘Spider-Man’ reboot heads to cinemas on 28 July 2017.
