‘Guardians of Galaxy’ Lifts Disney Past $1 Billion at Domestic Box Office

The Marvel space romp “Guardians of the Galaxy” will on Thursday lift Disney past the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office for the year, the studio said. It's the ninth consecutive year and 18th overall that the studio has reached the threshold.

Following its record-setting $94.3 million domestic debut last weekend — the biggest August opening ever — “Guardians” has been on a tear at the box office.

It posted the summer's biggest Monday ($11.7 million) and Tuesday ($11.9 million), and added another $8.8 million on Wednesday for a total domestic gross of $126.8 million. It has added $92.5 million from 42 territories and its global gross was $219.3 million as of Wednesday.

On Monday, Disney reached the $2 billion mark at the international box office for the fifth consecutive year and in company record time, surpassing last year's record by nearly three weeks. The studio has also topped $3 billion globally for the fifth consecutive year and the eighth time ever. It crossed the mark on Tuesday, the fastest the studio has reached this threshold.

Also contributing to Disney's big year have been “Frozen,” the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ blockbuster which opened in November 2013 and has earned more than $1.27 billion worldwide; Marvel's “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which opened domestically April 4 and has brought in $713.7 million globally; and “Maleficent,” which opened domestically May 30 and is currently the No. 3 film of 2014 with $732.4 million worldwide.
