“Gossip Girl” creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will write and produce the live-action adaptation of”Monster High” for Universal Pictures.

Mattel’s Monster High is the popular franchise that centers on the perfectly-imperfect teenage children of the world’s most famous monsters.

From entertainment and publishing to video games and apparel, the “Monster High” brand has exploded in popularity since its fall 2010 launch, becoming a $1.4 billion brand at retail and one of the top 5 brands in the toy industry.

Schwartz and Savage will produce under their Fake Empire banner alongside Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who brought the project to the studio. Mattel’s Playground Productions will executive produce.

Universal’s vice president of production Maradith Frenkel and creative executive Chloe Yellin will oversee the project for the studio.

Schwartz and Savage most recently produced the Universal drama “Endless Love,” which hits theaters on Valentine’s Day next year. On the feature side, the duo has an overall deal at Paramount Pictures, while their TV business is set up at ABC Studios. Their shows “Hart of Dixie” and “The Carrie Diaries” are currently airing on the CW.

Schwartz and Savage are represented by WME and attorney Joel McKuin, while CAA reps Zadan, Meron and Mattel.
