Global Screen Acquires ‘Bank Lady’

LONDON — Munich-based sales company Global Screen has picked up worldwide distribution rights to “Bank Lady,” the true story of Germany’s first female bank robber.

Christian Alvart’s pic tells the 1960s-set story of Gisela Werler, a factory worker from Hamburg who becomes a notorious bank robber, portrayed as a cunning and glamorous bandit, thanks to the various disguises, wigs and film-star sunglasses worn during heists. Werler takes ever greater risks, with lover Hermann in tow, while police inspector Fisher is close on her heels.

It is “Catch Me If You Can” meets “Bonnie and Clyde,” Julia Weber, Global Screen’s head of sales, said. “A perfect blend of authentic cops-and-robbers drama and love story,” she added.

“Christian Alvart’s direction is fast-paced and nuanced, while Gisela’s wonderful costumes and a superb ’60s production design bring in a strong stylish element,” Weber said.

“Bank Lady,” which was produced by Syrreal Entertainment, stars Nadeshda Brennicke, Charly Hubner, Ken Duken and Heinz Hoenig. It will be released in Germany by Studiocanal in spring 2014.

Alvart’s credits include 2005 serial killer thriller “Antibodies,” and 2009 sci-fi horror “Pandorum,” which starred Dennis Quaid.
