‘Fruitvale Station’ Murder Revisited at LAFF

Michael B. Jordan knew all about the murder of Oscar Grant by Bay Area police officers even before he read Ryan Coogler’s script.

“I remember the incident when it happened in 2009, and I remember being very frustrated and pissed off and sad,” said the actor. “And I felt helpless…now that it came around again it’s like I can finally express myself through my art and through my work.”

“Fruitvale Station” unspooled June 17 as part of the Los Angeles Film Festival at the Regal Cinemas.

Despite the tragic material, costar Melonie Diaz said it was the little things, like manicures, that made her bond with the real-life woman she plays in the Weinstein Company pic: Grant’s widow, Sophina.

“We hung out a lot,” Diaz recalled. “We got our nails done together. She picked out my nail color.”
