Fox Closes In On ‘X-Men’ Series, Network Bosses Talk ‘Wayward Pines’ Follow-Up, ‘Knock Knock’ Demise – TCA

X-Men is closer to coming to TV. There had been a lot of chatter that X-Men would be one of the top Fox projects this development season. Asked about the state of the project at the TCA Summer Press Tour today, Fox’s Dana Walden sounded optimistic that a deal is near. “We’re in negotiations with Marvel,” she said. “We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to announce something soon, but we’re not closed on deal yet.”

Showrunners Evan Katz and Manny Coto as well as J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3) had been working on an X-Men TV series adaptation at 20th TV, which “will be a long-running series,” Walden said. It is expected to feature familiar characters from the comic books and the movies though some of the top commodities, like Wolverine, are expected to stay exclusive to features.

Wayward Pines was designed as a stand-alone limited series, Fox is exploring a follow-up. “M. Night Shyamalan and the author of the the book series (Blake Crouch) just started conversations about it, perhaps it would be another miniseries event… if the author can lay in the future book series.”

ox’s Walden and Gary Newman also were asked to do a postmortem on Ryan Seacrest-hosted live reality series Knock Knock, which was yanked after two episodes. “We liked the show, we like Ryan and Simon Fuller,” she said. “It felt original and consistent with what we are trying to do on the spirited side. Summer is hard time to launch a new show. Looking back, we probably should’ve scheduled it in a different time of year when there is more circulation on the network. Because of the live nature of the show, it’s hard to explain to audiences what the show is.”

Asked after the panel of the possibility for a crossover between Ryan Murphy’s horror franchises Scream Queens and American Horror Story, Walden said there is none.
