Fox To Build Theme Park In Malaysia
A licensing agreement between 20th Century Fox Consumer Products and Resorts World Genting will see a Fox-branded theme park open in Malaysia in 2016. The park, to be located at the current Genting Outdoor Theme Park outside Kuala Lumpur, will feature rides and attractions based on the studio’s films including the Ice Age and Night At The Museum franchises, Rio, Alien, Life Of Pi and Predator. The current park will close September 1 to facilitate construction — some rides already have been shut down — with the projected soft opening set for 2016. It will feature 25-plus acres of land and more than 25 rides. The deal was sealed during an official signing event today in Kuala Lumpur that included 20th Century Fox Consumer Products president Jeffrey Godsick and Dato Lee Choong Yan, president and COO of Genting Malaysia Berhad. The project is expected to cost $125M to build, according to The Wall Street Journal, as part of a nearly $1 billion overall of the resort that originally opened in 1978.
This would be Fox’s second attempt at an international theme park: It launched Fox Studios Backlot in Sydney in 1999, but it was shuttered in 2001. It has been licensing its films to other parks, however, including a deal with Disney for Avatar that will see a themed attraction in Orlando and with Universal Studios for a ride based on The Simpsons.
