Fandango Sees 57% Surge in Ticket Sales for Best Year in History

By any measure, 2012 was very good to Fandango. The ticketer lured away AMC Theaters, the country's largest theater chain, from chief rival Movietickets.com and then partnered with three former MovieTickets.com cohorts, AOL Moviefone, Yahoo! Movies and MSN Entertainment, to sell seats.

Now Fandango says it has the numbers to prove that it was the strongest year in its history -- well, not numbers exactly, as the NBCUniversal division doesn't publicly release revenue or profits, but the percentages at least.

Fandango said that 2012 was the company's best-performing year thanks to a 57 percent surge in annual ticket sales. It also enjoyed a 34 percent leap in monthly visitors to its online and mobile destinations and 31 million downloads of its mobile apps. Monthly visits increased to as much as 41 million monthly uniques.

To bolster its traffic, Fandango is launching several digital video shows, hosted by its new chief correspondent, Dave Karger, whom the company brought over from Entertainment Weekly last September.

Mobile tickets sales increased 171 percent year-over-year, and accounted for more than 30 percent of its overall ticket sales, Fandango said. Going forward, the company said it hopes to expand reserve seating and paperless mobile ticketing options.
