‘Entourage’ Leads All Films Wednesday But Is Lower In Actuals – Box Office Update

UPDATE, Thursday 7:40 AM: Warner Bros.’ Entourage is reporting a $5.36M Wednesday at 3,058 venues, thus leading all pics yesterday. That figure is less than the rosy results that many were projecting from matinees and we hear that evening ticket sales tapered off. Industry estimates now see Entourage in the high teens to low $20Ms for the five-day. Despite any kind of slowdown in its 24-hour cycle, Entourage is bound to have a great summer with its A- CinemaScore. With a grade like that, a film’s opening will typically yield a 3.5X multiple in regards to its final domestic B.O. Another upside for the Doug Ellin-directed HBO feature adaptation is that it only cost $27.5M. Warner Bros./New Line’s San Andreas came in second with $3.9M at 3,777. Current cume through six days for the Dwayne Johnson headliner is $69M. On Fandango’s Fanticipation Weekend Buzz meter, which was released yesterday during the late afternoon, Spy was topping the chart at an 83 index, followed by Entourage at 79. The R-rated Melissa McCarthy comedy directed by Paul Feig is expected to take the 3-day with a low to mid $30Ms gross.

PREVIOUS Wednesday, 3:41 PM: So maybe Vincent Chase doesn’t have to sign on to that Aquaman movie. From the get-go this morning, we’ve been hearing that Entourage is overperforming with strong play out of New York and the East Coast where the show was a hit. Wednesday should ring up $6M-$7M (inclusive of last night’s $2M). The projection over five days is now low-to-mid $20Ms. Some bullish projections see $27M-$28M, however, what’s hard to predict with this is whether it’s frontloaded with fans (which, although this isn’t the comp demo wise, was the case with the big pic version of HBO’s Sex And The City — all the chicas came out on its opening day Friday). As mentioned yesterday, Fandango pre-sales for the Doug Ellin adaptation of the HBO comedy series were going gangbusters and continued to rally into today.

Social media buzz has been quite active for Entourage per RelishMix. EP Mark Wahlberg, who counts close to 16M Facebook followers and 2.5M Twitter eyeballs, has continually been posting clips and trailers for the film. On the official Entourage FB, daily likes have popped 2x and will pass 4M fans by the weekend, while the No. 1 FB native posted trailer has 11M views which is impressive. Jeremy Piven counts 2.5M Twitter followers. #Entourage and #EntourageMovie Twitter hashtags have spiked lightly 2 times in the last week and rocketed today to a combined 14k hashtags. Instagram activity is lively, up to 80k followers with 18 posts in the last day including short vids from the premiere and BTS stills.

PREVIOUS, Wednesday 7:15 AM: Vince, Eric, Johnny Drama, Turtle and Ari cashed in $2 million last night in previews as Warner Bros.’ Entourage got a leg up on the upcoming competitive weekend.

Predictions for the Doug Ellin film are in the mid $20Ms for the five-day; high teens to low $20Ms for FSS. The film opens in 3,108 theaters today and will increase its count slightly by Friday. Entourage was originally dated against Jurassic World for a June 12 release, but Warner Bros. moved it up. 20th Century Fox’s Spy is expected to conquer the weekend with a low-to-mid $30Ms take while Warner Bros./New Line’s San Andreas will still be quaking with a $25M-$27M FSS followed by newcomer Insidious: Chapter 3 from Grammercy, which should clock in the mid $20Ms.

Last night, Fandango reported that 50% of its tickets sales yesterday were from Entourage, a jarring stat as the R-rated adult-skewing comedy outstripped the day’s pre-sales for such pics as San Andreas, Inside Out and Jurassic World. Entourage is still Fandango’s No. 1 ticket-seller today too, seeing brisk sales for an early Wednesday morning.

The feature version of the Emmy-winning HBO series hits the big screen a little less than four years after its time on the small tube. That’s about the same time in between the series finale of Sex And The City in 2004 and its 2008 film version which bowed to $57M and woke the town up to the fact that women actually go to the movies in throngs. Entourage was greenlit with Ellin behind the camera in January 2013. Ten months later, negotiations slowed cameras rollings. By November 2013, a January 2014 start date was announced. Entourage was in action by February last year.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ No. 1 weekend champ San Andreas continues to shake multiplex cash registers open with decent midweek figures. After making $4.8M Monday, business rose 20% for the Dwayne Johnson film on Tuesday with $5.8M. Current stateside cume for the Brad Peyton-helmed title stands at $65.18M.
