‘Elsa and Fred,’ with Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer, Opens Miami Festival
Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer topliner “Elsa and Fred,” a remake of the 2008 Argentinian/Spanish hit, will open the 31st annual Miami Intl. Film Festival, a ten day event that this year will also screen the world premiere of Raymond De Felitta’s “Rob the Mob” and hand a career achievement award to John Turturro.
Michael Radford’s “Elsa and Fred,” about two people who find love late in life, features MacLaine and Plummer as the titular lovers as well as Marcia Gay Harden, George Segal, Chris Noth, James Brolin and Wendell Pierce, among others.
“Rob the Mob” (pictured) is the latest team-up for writer-helmer De Felitta and star Andy Garcia, the duo who last collaborated on indie hit “City Island.” Michael Pitt, Nina Arianda, Ray Romano, Burt Young and Griffin Dunne also are in the cast.
Turturro scores the career tribute for work as an actor that includes “Barton Fink” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” as well as directorial outings such as “Mac” and “Illuminata.” His latest effort as a director — “Fading Gigolo” with Sofia Vergara, Woody Allen, Sharon Stone and Liev Schreiber — will screen as part of the fest as well.
MIFF also has on tap a slate of features, docs and shorts in competitive categories, as well as non-competitive sections grouped under titles such as Culinary Cinema, Florida Focus and Mayhem. In addition, fest has programmed “close-up” slates focusing on pics from China, Germany and Mexico.
The Miami Intl. Film Festival runs March 7-16.
