E.J. Bonilla’s ‘The House That Jack Built’ Gets November Release
Singapore-based Vega Baby has acquired North American rights to the New York-set crime film “The House That Jack Built,” Variety has learned exclusively.
E.J. Bonilla, Melissa Fumero, Saundra Santiago and Leo Minaya star in the movie, directed by Henry Barrial from a script by the late Joseph Vasquez, best known for “Hangin’ With the Homeboys.”
The film will get a day-and-date VOD and theatrical launch on Nov. 6.
Sam Kitt, Michael Lieber, Hitesh Patel and Mark Stolaroff are producing. The film premiered at the 2013 Los Angeles Film Festival, and received the best director and audience awards at the Queens World Film Festival last year.
Bonilla portrays a hot-blooded, ambitious young man who buys a small apartment building in the Bronx and moves his boisterous family into the complex to live rent-free. Tension builds as he imposes his views on everyone around him, including his fiancée (Fumero), while hiding the fact that his corner store is a front for selling marijuana.
Bonilla is best known as a regular on the final seasons of “The Guiding Light.” Fumero stars on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”
“The House that Jack Built” is the first theatrical release by Vega Baby, the producers of “Everly” with Salma Hayek. The deal for the “House That Jack Built” was brokered by attorney Dawn Botti on behalf of the filmmakers.
