Dungeons & Dragons Movie In The Works

It’s official – ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ is returning to the big screen.

“Warner Bros. Pictures, Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures and Sweetpea Entertainment are moving forward on a feature film franchise based on Dungeons & Dragons, the world’s most popular role playing game,” said an official press release.

And this time, it’s going to be huge.

Of course, fans of the fantasy role-playing game will no doubt remember the dismal attempt to create a ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ movie back in 2000 – a film which failed to capture any of the imagination that goes into a game of D&D.

Starring Justin Whalin, Jeremy Irons and Thora Birch, the appalling cash-in managed a dismal $33.8 million at the box office, failing to even recoup the film’s $45 million budget.

And with odd cameos from Sir Richard O’Brien and Tom Baker, it left many fans scratching their head.

But the upcoming ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ seems to be on course to set things straight. And just to prove exactly how serious they are, it looks as though Warner Bros. has already gone and got themselves a script, penned by David Leslie Johnson.

“We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen,” said Warner Bros. boss, Greg Silverman. “This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”

Unfortunately, there are no further details about the plot of the upcoming movie, except that it will “bring the rich fantasy setting of the Forgotten Realms to life”. For fans of the game, the Forgotten Realms are a popular setting within D&D lore… and have spawned a number of adventures and campaigns.

I can’t help thinking this is a particularly savvy move for Warner Bros. After all, with the conclusion of ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, they’ve been left with a rather large fantasy-shaped hole in their release schedule… and a property as well-known as ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ could end up plugging the gap to huge financial success.

If it’s done right.

Of course, for now we’ll just have to wait and see. But it can’t be as bad as the previous film and its straight-to-dvd sequels… can it?
