‘Downton Abbey’ Season 6 Trailer: UK Start Date Set For Final Sojourn At The Estate

ITV has dropped a promo for the final season of its flagship period drama, Downton Abbey. The network also confirmed today that Season 6 will kick off on September 20 in the UK. Not much has been publicly revealed about the upcoming farewell, other than it being set in 1925. The teaser above does presage more change at the Abbey as Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) tells Mr Carson (Jim Carter), “If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can’t, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time.”

Ending the final season before the 1929 stock market crash leaves “a lot of rich territory” to explore if a movie “ever happens,” Carnival Films chief Gareth Neame said at TCA in early August.

I caught episode 1 at a London screening on Downton‘s press day in mid-August and while I’m sworn to secrecy, I can reiterate that it’s pretty much everything a Downton fan would hope. There’s drama and emotion packed into the launch and enough intrigue to indicate how things may move forward as the seminal show draws to a conclusion after six years. The PBS Materpiece debut in the U.S. is set for January 3 as previously announced.

On press day, creator Julian Fellowes said he was pleased with how he’s concluded things and has “shown a chunk of what everyone’s life would be.” Maggie Smith, the indefatigable Dowager Countess, chimed in that she was due for a long rest now that shooting has wrapped. “I’m going to be lying down. I believe for quite some time.” She’s also looking forward to catching up on the entire run, via box set.
