Disney Shifts Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ to Summer 2015 — Sets ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel Showdown

Disney has moved Edgar Wright’s “Ant-Man,” the story of the smallest (and sometimes largest) of earth’s mightiest heroes, to July 15, 2015, the studio announced Monday — unflinchingly placing it just a couple of weeks after Warner Bros./DC’s “Man of Steel” sequel.

The shift could also signal where Disney is heading in terms of a release date for “Star Wars VII.” With three other movies — “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (May 1), Pixar’s “Inside Out” (June 19) and “Pirates of the Caribbean 5″ (July 10) — set for summer 2015, it’s hard to imagine wedging it in there, making a fall or holiday release most likely.

Disney originally set the Marvel Comics-inspired “Ant-Man” for a Nov. 6 release in 2015. The new date puts “Ant Man” directly up against Fox’s Tim Burton’s fantasy film “Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars,” but moves it away from Sony’s 007 film “Bond 24.” It will, however, open just two weeks after Warner Bros.’ “Man of Steel” sequel.

Wright is the the English director behind such this summer’s ‘The World’s End” as well as cult hits “Hot Fuzz” and “Shawn of the Dead.” He’ll work from a screenplay that he’s co-writing with Joe Cornish.
