‘Despicable Me 2′ Crosses $400M Worldwide And $200M Domestic Box Office Today

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment made the announcement this morning. With Friday’s estimated domestic grosses of $197.8 million and an international estimated gross of $206.8 million, Despicable Me 2 reached $404.6 million at the worldwide box office today. Domestically, the studios’ estimates are showing that the 3D toon will cross $200 million later today after just one week in release. Film only cost a very reasonable $76M and has 18 more territories to open over the next few months. This sequel reteams directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud with screenwriting duo Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul. Old and new voiceover talent include Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, and Benjamin Bratt. But of course the sequel’s big draws are those lovable Minions who in the original toon were given form and function by Coffin & Renaud to underscore the comedy surrounding Gru’s madcap mayhem. And in 2014 the little yellow guys get their own stand alone Minion movie with Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm already attached.
