Deadline’s The Contenders: ‘Son Of Saul’ Director László Nemes & Star Géza Röhrig Discuss The Harrowing Cannes Winner’s Journey To The Screen
Certainly one of the most acclaimed , as well as harrowing movies on display at our big 5th annual awards season event The Contenders Presented By Deadline (which took place in front of a packed DGA house full of AMPAS and Guild voters earlier this month) was Son Of Saul, Hungary’s official entry into the Best Foreign Language Film race. The movie which took Cannes by storm in May and won the Grand Prize was instantly picked up by
Sony Pictures Classics and will be released in late December in order to qualify in all categories, not just the Foreign Film contest. It could be the rare subtitled movie to score multiple nominations including for director Laszlo Nemes, star Geza Rohrig and Cinematographer Matyas Erdely. Certainly SPC is planning a wide campaign for it and included it prominently during their panel for the Contenders event. All three appeared on stage with me to discuss the unique challenges of this World War II set-story of Saul Auslander, a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners who were forced to assist the Nazis in carrying out their massive program of extermination. The filmmakers and star (a non-professional actor who lives in New York and writes poetry) talk about the importance and delicate balance it took to bring this very dark holocaust tale to life on the screen.
