Cynthia Cidre Inks Overall Deal With ABC Studios
On the heels of Cynthia Cidre coming on board ABC/ABC Studio’s new drama series Blood And Oil as executive producer/co-showrunner, she has signed a two-year overall deal with ABC Studios. In addition to her duties on Blood And Oil, starring Don Johnson and Chace Crawford, Cidre also will develop new projects for network, cable, and streaming services.
Cidre is segueing to Blood And Oil — set in booming North Dakota after the biggest oil discovery in American history — from another sprawling drama about the oil industry, TNT’s Dallas, which she developed, executive produced and ran for 3 seasons. Outside of the ABC Studios deal, Cidre has been working with award-winning Indian director Shekhar Kapur on a TV series project that would build on Kapur’s Elizabeth movies starring Cate Blanchett. The project is set up at Warner Horizon, the studio behind Dallas.
In fall 1978, Cidre had just enrolled into University of Miami’s doctorate program in Victorian literature when she found out that, unbeknownst to her, the professor teaching her undergraduate screenwriting class had submitted one of her works into
a screenwriting competition, and that she had won it. Cidre left Miami for Hollywood with a stipend from Columbia Pictures to write a feature script. The script she penned eventually became the 1991 MGM feature Fires Within, about people she knew growing up in Little Havana. Cuban-born, Miami-raised Cidre worked in features, writing the 1992 Mambo Kings, until she switched to television more than a decade ago after a meeting with CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tassler. Cidre wrote four scripts for the network, three of which went to pilot and one, Cane — a drama about a Latino family in the rum business toplined by Jimmy Smits — went to series.
