CW’s ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ & ‘iZombie’ Get Backup Script Orders Ahead Of Premieres
As the CW starts rolling out its fall schedule, the network is giving a confidence boost to the two new series that will be seeking back orders: fres
hman Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and sophomore iZombie. Both have been given orders for five additional scripts a day ahead of iZombie‘s second-season opener Tuesday night and ahead of comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s series premiere October 12. They join new NBC drama Blindspot, which has received an order for 9 additional scripts.
The CW employed the same strategy last fall with its two hot newcomers, The Flash and Jane The Virgin, both of which received orders for three additional scripts a couple of weeks ahead of their debuts. Both went on to earn full-season orders and second-season renewals.
Like was the case with The Flash and Jane The Virgin, the script orders came after the CW had been pleased with the post-pilot episodes of the two series, including Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s transition from half-hour to hourlong format (the series created by and starring Rachel Bloom was originally developed and piloted as a half-hour comedy by Showtime). Rob Thomas’ zom-dram-rom-com iZombie starring Rose McIver has a 13-episode Season 2 order as it launched in midseason.
The CW brass like having the network’s new fall series prepared for a possible back order with pickups of additional scripts early on. Two seasons ago, all three freshmen — The Originals, The Tomorrow People and Reign — received orders for three additional scripts in October. All three series went on to score full-season pickups, with two, The Originals and Reign, also making it to Season 2.
