'Croods' Cruises Past $200M at Overseas Box Office

DreamWorks Animation's 3D family film "The Croods" passed the $200 million mark at the international box office this weekend.

The 3D caveman cartoon took in $34.1 million from 62 markets to raises its international total to $206.8 million. With its $125.8 million domestic haul, its global gross now stands at more than $331 million. Those numbers are good news for DreamWorks, which lost money after the misfire of its last release, "Rise of the Guardians."

"The Croods" is only the second film this year to top $300 million globally, behind Disney's 'Oz the Great and Powerful." The "Wizard of Oz" prequel added $13.6 million from 57 foreign markets this weekend to raise its international total to $241.3 million. With $212.7 million in domestic ticket sales, its global total now stands at $454 million.

Paramount knew overseas would be critical for its 3D "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," and so far it's looking good.

The 3D toy soldier sequel, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum, was the biggest earner at the foreign box office for the second consecutive weekend with $40.2 million from 61 markets. That ups its overseas total after two weeks to $145.2 million, just behind the $152 million that the original film, "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra," took over its entire foreign run. Major markets Japan and China are yet to come.

Warner Bros. "Jack the Giant Slayer" brought in nearly $11 million from 61 foreign markets this weekend. That ups its foreign total to $116 million and its worldwide haul to $178 million.

In its debut, Sony's "Evil Dead" scared up $4.5 million from 22 markets. That topped another foreign opener, Universal's 3D re-release of "Jurassic Park," which brought in $3 million from nine markets.

The psychological thriller "Trance" brought in $3.2 million from six overseas markets for Fox.
