Coen Brothers, Alexander Payne, James Gray Going to New York Film Fest
The Coen brothers' folk-scene movie "Inside Llewyn Davis" (below), Alexander Payne's father-and-son road trip "Nebraska" (at top) and J.C. Chandor's Robert Redford showcase "All Is Lost" are among the films that will screen at the 2013 New York Film Festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced on Monday.
The 32 new films join three previously-announced films: Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips," which will open NYFF, Spike Jonze's "Her," which will close it, and Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" which will serve as its centerpiece gala.
The bookings continue the trend of recent years that has found NYFF becoming a major showcase for awards-bound films, including a number of key titles that had their world premieres in New York. Over the last three years, notable NYFF debuts have included "Life of Pi," "The Social Network" and the first public sneak preview of "Lincoln."
Other films joining this year's lineup include James Gray's "The Immigrant," Ralph Fiennes' "The Invisible Woman," James Franco's "Child of God" and Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive."
On the international side, the fest will showcase Catherine Breillat's "Abuse of Weakness," Claire Denis' "Bastards," Agnieszka Holland's "Burning Bush," Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Like Father, Like Son," Hong Sang-soo's "Nobody's Daughter Haewon," Corneliu Porumboiu's "When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism" and two sexually explicit films that won raves at Cannes, Alain Guiraudie's "Stranger by the Lake" and Abdellatif Kechiche's Palme d'Or winner "Blue is the Warmest Color."
Documentaries will include Frederick Wiseman's "At Berkeley" and Claude Lanzmann's "The Last of the Unjust."
A number of key NYFF films appear to be skipping the Toronto International Film Festival, which is typically the key fall showcase for awards movies. "Captain Phillips," "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "Her" are all premiering in New York, making TIFF bookings impossible – and while Toronto will announce an additional round of programming additions on Tuesday, it has so far not booked "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Nebraska" or "All Is Lost," all of which previously screened at Cannes.
Additional NYFF programming will be announced in the coming weeks.
The festival will run from Sept. 27 through Oct. 13. Subscription packages and VIP passes are currently available, with general tickets going on sale on Sept. 8.
