Classic Horror Nosferatu Will Be Remade
It seems more and more evident that nothing is safe from a remake nowadays, with the news that 1922 horror classic ‘Nosferatu’ will be remade.
According to Deadline, Studio 8 have in place an as of yet untitled film that will serve as a remake to the iconic vampire movie.
Robert Eggers is alleged to be writing and directing the film. He recently won the Best Director acclaim at Sundance for horror film, ‘The Witch’, so is at least proven in the genre to some degree.

However, it’s likely that this remake won’t be all that similar to the 1922 classic, which is not only in black and white, but also silent. Sadly, modern, mainstream audiences don’t tend to opt for silent colourless films, even though ‘The Artist’ experienced huge critical success in 2012. It’s certainly a huge challenge for the young director who, so far, has only directed one feature film.
But the enormity of the pressure and subsequent expectation shouldn’t phase him because he’s not the first to redo the timeless story. Werner Herzog ‘went there’ in 1979 and, in the opinion of many, did a great job. In hindsight that may put Eggers under more pressure, but it’s reassurance that when it comes to remakes, these things can work out.
So what can Eggers bring to the table? His lack of experience is clear, but a fresh face with an unfazed mind might encourage him to be experimental. But more importantly, do we need a third version of the same film, and what nuances or additions will he actually bring?
That said, Deadline claim it’ll be a “visceral” adaptation of F.W. Muurnau’s creepy original, and as vague as that is, it’s better than the studio coming out to declare it’ll be a shot-for-shot remake, so at least that’s something.
