‘Ultron’, ‘Furious’ Lead As ‘Cinderella’ Scores In Japan: International B.O. Update

UPDATE, 1:30 PM PT MONDAY: This weekend was 41% over last frame for the Top 10 studio titles internationally – and more than 50% higher than the comparable frame last year. At that point there were two Marvel properties in the overseas wash, albeit from different studios. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 still was casting its web at the time, and Disney’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier was recruiting offshore audiences. This frame had one Marvel movie and a non-superhero holdover with a tiger in its tank. While Furious 7 has had an unencumbered, and spectacular, path over a couple of weeks, Avengers: Age Of Ultron will look for world domination in the coming frames. There is nothing new bowing this week studio-wise, but Ultron will expand, thunderously. Actuals have been updated below, so far for those two films as well as The Woman In Gold, Home, Cinderella, Dragonball Z: Resurrection Of F, Run All Night, The Longest Ride, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Ex Machina, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Unfriended.

More to come…

PREVIOUS, SUNDAY 1:49 PM PT: While Avengers: Age Of Ultron hulked out to a massive start in 44 offshore territories, and Furious 7 put new fuel in the record books this frame, the rest of the international box office universe was still moving along. There were no new studio entrants offshore, although Chinese coming-of-age debut The Left Ear ranked No. 3 for the frame at $27M. Elsewhere abroad were holdovers and expansions, including Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, DreamWorks Animation’s Home and Disney’s Cinderella.

At $200.2M, Disney/Marvel’s Ultron notably debuted 44% bigger than 2012’s Avengers in comparable markets — no small feat in an economic climate that has seen local currencies tumble against the greenback. For a closer picture at Ultron’s marvels, see my separate story. Furious 7, meanwhile, became the third film ever to cross $1B internationally, adding $70M this frame, and has now transformed itself into the top-grossing movie ever in China (more on that here).

Also in China, Alec Su’s directorial debut The Left Ear jumped out to $27M, according to Rentrak. Based on the novel by Rao Xueman, it tells the story of a deaf girl who becomes infatuated with a fellow student.

Placing 4th for the frame, DreamWorks Animation’s Home was also new to the Middle Kingdom. Handled by Oriental DreamWorks locally, it earned $7.7M on 3,842 screens. Combined with the Fox territories this session, the alien-out-of-water pic took in $15M to bring the international cume to $148.5M. Holds were strong in France ($3.37M cume), the UK ($31.47M cume) and Brazil ($5.8M cume).

In more good news for Disney, Cinderella twirled into Japan with a No. 1 opening and the biggest first-day and weekend for a Western release of 2015. The $4.8M bow was 112% above the opening of Oz: The Great And Powerful and 19% behind the start of Maleficent. In total, the live-action fairy tale added $9.4M in its 7th weekend of release, currently across 41 territories. The international total is $284.8M for a $474.6M global cume.

Segway-ing to Sony’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, the North American No. 2 film in the frame collared an estimated $5.3M on 3,210 screens in 46 territories overseas. Mexico was the big holdover to lead all markets with $1.4M for a local cume of $3.8M and a drop of 24%. Germany added $565K in its 3rd frame for a $3M cume thus far. Venezuela fell just 21% in the sophomore session, grossing $470K at No. 2 for a $1.4M cume. Australia after two weekends has a $1.9M cume and the UK is at $1.9M after its third time out. Spain opened to No. 4 with $435K on 203 screens, and Peru bowed with $358K on 34 screens – the biggest Kevin James film of all time there. The international total is now $17.8M.

Fox International Productions’ Dragonball Z: Resurrection Of F held strongly in Japan with $3.9M on 646 screens, elevating its cume to $15.3M. That was good for the No. 2 spot behind the incoming Cinderella.

Warner Bros’ Run All Night absconded with a further $3M from 3,478 screens in 46 markets. The UK leads at $3.2M, followed closely by France with $3.1M and Mexico at $2.8M. The Liam Neeson pic now has an international total of $33.3M. Italy, Brazil and Japan have yet to release.

Still awaiting its China release, Insurgent has now grossed an estimated $271M worldwide. Internationally, the Lionsgate title added $2.6M this weekend, bringing the international cume to an estimated $146.2M, per the studio.

The Longest Ride roped in $1.14M in 39 territories and on 1,349 screens. The cume for the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation is $8.1M for Fox.

Fox’s Kingsman: The Secret Service spied a further $2.18M in the frame with Venezuela and China holding strongly. The international total is now $275.2M. The worldwide total has now passed $400M on the Matthew Vaughn-directed pic.

Paramount’s The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water squeezed $860K at the weekend from 1,640 locations in 33 territories including new openings in Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia & Montenegro. The international cume is now $148.6M.

The Woman In Gold painted a $850K weekend in six territories with a slight 24% drop. Notably, in New Zealand, it was No. 3 behind Ultron and Furious 7. The Weinstein Co pic rolls out over the next few months.

Alex Garland’s AI thriller Ex Machina took $663K for Universal in 15 territories to bring the international total to $7.86M. (Check out my colleague Anthony D’Alessandro’s charting of how the pic seduced North American crowds and is poised to be summer’s sleeper hit.)

Fox Searchlight’s The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ordered up $509K on 975screens in 28 markets, including a good hold in Germany, down just 33% with $164K. The international total is now $48.6M.

Universal’s Unfriended has an estimated total of $25.2M domestically and after booking debuts in Lithuania and Slovenia last weekend, opened Estonia and Latvia this frame. The international weekend was $63K in four territories for an early total of $133K.
