Chris Evans Debuts First 'Captain America: Civil War' Footage at D23, Marvel Teases 'Doctor Strange'

"Let's talk about the beginning of Phase 3."

So declared Kevin Feige as he kicked off the Marvel Studios portion of the Disney live-action panel at D23 on Saturday, promising first looks at Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. And he more than delivered on both!

Disney flew Captain America himself, Chris Evans, and his best buddy Falcon (Anthony Mackie) in from Germany just to premiere the first footage from Civil War. “It’s so good,” Evans giggled onstage.

Here’s what we saw: The teaser starts with Cap, Falcon, and Black Widow (Scarlett Johnasson) taking on Crossbones (Frank Grillo) and his henchmen in the streets. Crossbones taunts Cap,  saying, "You know he remembers you, your pal, your buddy, your Bucky?”

From there, it was a massive hodgepodge of action and awesomeness: We got our first look at Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), flexing his claws. (Still no Spider-Man though.) We saw baddie Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), sans purple mask. We saw the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) fighting alongside Cap.

There’s no talk of The Accords from that Ant-Man tag, but Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) does tell Cap, “Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth.” And we saw part of the showdown that pits heroes against heroes, with Widow asking, mid-fight, “Are we still friends?” Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) replies, "Depends how hard you hit me.”

At the end of the trailer, Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) pops in to meet the team and appropriately fangirls over Captain America. “I know you know a lot of supers. I’d like to think you for thanking of me,” he stumbles, before turning to Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and deadpanning, “I know you, too. You’re great.”

Meanwhile, Doctor Strange hasn’t started shooting yet -- production starts this fall -- but Benedict Cumberbatch recorded a video message promising fans that the movie will include, “Girls, cars, explosions, and a little bit of astral projection into multiple dimensions. The usual fare.”

That said, Feige unveiled a sizzle reel full of concept art for Doctor Strange and it looks like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It’s darker and grittier than we expected, but the alternate dimensions look otherworldly and very, very trippy. (Feige says it’ll be, “As weird as anything we’ve done.”)

Feige also confirmed Tilda Swinton will play The Ancient One, the mystical guru who gives Doctor Stephen Strange his powers, and Chiwetel Ejiofor has been cast as the villainous Mordo. However, there was no sign of the Night Nurse, sadly, so it looks like that Rachel McAdams rumor isn’t true...yet.
