China Box Office: ‘Monster Hunt’ and ‘Pancake Man’ Keep a Lock on Second Weekend
The summer’s big three movies kept a lock on the Chinese box office.
Despite the arrival of five new entries into the box office chart – including “The Imitation Game” – the trio of “Monster Hunt,” “Pancake Man” and “Monkey King: Hero Is Back” held on to top three positions and broke records.
“Monster Hunt” added sold over 19 million tickets worth $113 million in its second frame, according to Entgroup. That pushed its cumulative total to $221 million after 11 days, a new record for a Chinese movie.
“Pancake Man” (aka “Jianbin Man”) a superhero spoof comedy with cameos by Jean-Claude van Damme, held equally strongly in second place. It grossed $70.12 million in the week, for a cumulative of $140 million after 10 days. That’s already the ninth highest Chinese film of all time.
“Monkey King” became the biggest animation with $32.3 million in its third week, giving it a 17 day total of $108 million.
Tang Wei and China-Hong Kong co-produced romantic comedy “Only You” debuted in fourth place. But with available locations less than half that of the top two competitors, the film earned an okay $7.42 million in 3 days.
“Seer Movie 5: Rise of Thunder,” a Chinese animation franchise movie, opened in fifth with $6.59 million in 4 days.
The only new foreign movie making it into the chart last week was “The Imitation Game”. It earned $3.04 million in 6 days and claimed sixth spot. “Shaun The Sheep,” followed in seventh with $3.01 million for a 10 day total of $7.29 million.
As screens have been withdrawn, previous chart topper “Tiny Times 4.0” has seen its performance largely halted. It earned $1.76 million, to extend its total to $77.8 million.
Chinese-made horror “The Strange House” opened in ninth spot with $1.53 million. Another Chinese animation “Aura Star: Attack of the Temple” crept in at ten with $1.13 million.
