New ‘Captain Phillips’ Trailer Shows a Heroic Tom Hanks

Sony has released a second trailer of a heroic Tom Hanks’ “Captain Phillips,” two months before its theatrical release on Oct. 11.

The trailer starts with both Captain Richard Phillips and the Somali pirates preparing to set out to sea in their respective vessels — the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama and several speedboats for the pirates — before offering an exploration of the negotiating dynamic between the captain and the pirates.

“The Navy is not going to let you win,” Hanks says at one point. “They would rather sink this boat than let you win.”

Phillips allowed himself to be taken hostage by the pirates in 2009 in exchange for the safety of his crew.

Paul Greengrass directs the movie, produced by Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Kevin Spacey and based on Phillips’ memoir “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea.”

The film has been set as the opening title for the Tokyo International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
