Cannes Winner ‘The Treasure’ Acquired by Sundance Selects

Sundance Selects has bought North American rights to Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu’s comedy “The Treasure,” Variety has learned exclusively.

“The Treasure” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Prix Un Certain Talent award. It will make its North American Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Contemporary World Cinema section.

The film stars Cuzin Toma, Adrian Purcarescu, Corneliu Cozmei, Cristina Toma and Nicodim Toma. Producers are Marcela Ursu, Sylvie Pialat, Nadia Turincev and Julie Gayet.

Variety gave “The Treasure” a strong review at Cannes, calling it a “sandpaper-dry caper comedy.” The story centers on a man’s neighbor asking for money to seek buried treasure in the backyard of his grandparents.

The deal was negotiated with Wild Bunch on behalf of the filmmakers. Sundance Selects/IFC Films previously released Porumboiu’s “Police/Adjective.”
