Canal Plus, Disney Extend Programming Deal With Force – Mipcom
Canal Plus is getting an extra dose of The Force. A renewed deal between the French pay-TV outlet and Disney Media Distribution will begin in January 2016 and encompass first-run features as well as SVOD services — and that means Star Wars, too. Disney has been heavily promoting its relationship with the franchise here at Mipcom where the massive stand is adorned with images of the Millennium Falcon, X-Wing fighters and light sabers.
Described as a new chapter in Canal’s relationship with Disney, this is a strong get for the company that is undergoing a sea change at the executive level.
The pact covers titles from Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Studios, Disney/Pixar and Lucasfilm. That includes Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as library movies from the saga and also the Academy Awards and ABC Studios content. It does not include the first-ever Star Wars movie, Episode IV, as Fox still holds those rights.
Canal’s streaming service Canalplay will continue to carry complete sets of ABC Studios product like Grey’s Anatomy and Lost as well as features like Cinderella and the Toy Story movies.
