BVI, Fox Take Burman’s ‘Rey del Once’ for Latin America
BUENOS AIRES — In increasingly customary moves on top-flight Argentine titles, two studios – Disney and Fox – have moved to acquire Latin American rights on “El Rey del Once – The Tenth Man,” from Daniel Burman (“Lost Embrace,” “Family Law”).
Buena Vista Intl. has secured theatrical rights for Latin America, Fox Plus, one of the region’s most powerful cable/satellite operations, premium pay TV/SVOD.
One of the most anticipated of titles from Argentina, where it is expected to see box office traction, “El Rey” is tipped for a major festival berth. Sold by Guido Rud’s FilmSharks Intl., and ready for delivery first quarter 2016, it also reps the latest movie from Burman whose 2004 “Lost Embrace” swept Berlin’s Grand Jury Prize and a best actor Silver Bear for Daniel Hendler.
A very loose follow-up to “Lost Embrace,” “King” shares the setting of Buenos Aires’ Jewish district, is again a father-son dramedy, but turns on different characters. Here, a son returns from New York to the city’s Jewish neighborhood called El Once, where he grew up, to take care of the family foundation that helps out for free people with real necessities. His return foregrounds the figure of his father who runs the community’s charity foundation, is a cherished figure in El Once, but seems unable to aid his own estranged son.
“This a brand new Burman that will travel to festivals and distributors because it joins the best of Daniel Burman’s crossover films such as ‘Lost Embrace,’ said FilmSharks’ Guido Rud.
Alan Sabbagh (“Masterplan,” “Mi Primera Boda”) and Julieta Zylberberg (“Wild Tales,” “The Invisible Eye) star. “The Motorcycle Diaries” co-producer BD Cine produces with Barbara Francisco and Delfina Montecchia’s Pasto Cine (“The Student,” “El incendio,” “Black Frost”).
Argentina’s Telefe/Telefonica Studios co-produces, bringing minority equity investment and large promotion muscle to the table.
“The project talks about how to forgive our parents, and whether it’s right to help whom we want, rather than whom we ought to aid,” Burman has commented.
