'Butler' Holds Top Spot at Box Office

'The Butler' Delivers Again, Overshadows 1D

After an impressive box-office-topping opening last weekend, Lee Daniels' The Butler held on to the top spot for its second weekend in a row.

The historical drama, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey among many well-known actors in an ensemble cast, took in an estimated $17 million domestic for the weekend, increasing its gross domestic total to $52.3 million.

Finishing behind The Butler was the comedy We're The Millers, which pushed closer to $100 million domestic with $13.5 million in its third weekend of release.

Below The Millers were two opening films, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (3rd: $9.2 million, $14 million), which opened on Wednesday, and the final Three Flavors Cornetto film The World's End, which drew in $8.9 million.

In an otherwise average late-summer box office, two highly publicized films, Kick-Ass 2 (9th: $4.3 million, $22.5 million) and Steve Jobs biopic Jobs (12th: $3 million, $12.1 million) both took in paltry portions in their second weekends.
