Busan: Taka Ichise’s ‘The Bride’ Wedded to Taiwan’s Good Image

The Bride,” a new chiller produced in Taiwan by Japanese horror-meister Taka Ichise, heads the debut Busan film slate of Taipei-based production and sales outfit Good Image.

“Bride,” the story of a man who starts to have visions from a previous incarnation, is directed by Lingo Hsieh and executive produced by Rita Chuang.

“This is a genuinely Taiwanese story, but Taka Ichise is such a perfectionist that he took major parts of the post-production process to Japan to work on there,” said Eric Chou who heads sales at Good Image.

Good Image was established earlier this year by Taiwanese filmmaker Yeh Tien-lun with backing from Kbro Media and production outfit Green Film Production. Kbro Media is a subsidiary of Kbro, one of Taiwan’s leading cable TV groups and a media investor with stakes that include a minority holding in Hong Kong’s Media Asia. Good Image made its market debut in Hong Kong’s FilMart in March and will next travel to the American Film Market in November.

Other titles on its Busan slate include “Maverick,” a police drama which opened the Taipei Film Festival; documentary “What Makes Love Last”; Busan festival selection “The Mad King of Taipei”; Bucheon festival selection “Welcome to the Happy Days”; and romantic drama “When Miracle Meets Maths,” which also played at the Taipei festival.

Ichise is the veteran who has production or writing credits on Japanese horror classics “Ring,” “Ju-on” and “Dark Water.” Many of his films were subsequently remade in the U.S., earning Ichise further kudos and inspiring him to open a Los Angeles office in addition to his Tokyo base. However, with the J-Horror boom now fading Ichise last month put his Japanese company Oz into formal bankruptcy.
