Busan: Asian Project Market Wraps Up With Award Winners
Hannah Makhmalbaf and renowned Chinese cinematographer Yu Lik-wai were among the recipients of prizes from the Busan Film Festival’s Asian Project Market. Prizes were announced at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Busan on Tuesday evening. Other winners included Korea’s Kim Tae-yong and Taiwan’s CJ Wang.
The project market, held Oct. 4-6, featured 30 titles from leading Asian auteurs and up-and-coming directors from across the region. The Busan Award, awarded by the Busan metropolitan government and worth $20,000, went to Makhmalbaf’s “London Stories,” an episodic film, taking place in the British capital during a 24-hour period. It includes four different, yet internally linked stories. It is to be produced by the Makhmalbaf family’s London-based Makhmalbaf Film House.
The Dexter Studios Award ($20,000) went to “A Means To an End,” a Hong Kong-French co-production to be directed by Yu and and produced by France’s Francois Da Silva.
Worth $10,000 each, the CJ Entertainment and Lotte Awards were respectively given to Mikhail Red’s Philippines-Qatar co-production “Birdshot,” and to “Brother.” The film will be the third feature by Korean director Kim Tae-yong, whose debut feature “Set Me Free” received the citizen critics’ award in Busan last year.
Kim Jung-han’s Korea-China co-production, “The Adventure of Han Mei Mei” received the KOCCA Award ($10,000). Indonesian director Eddie Cahyono’s “The Wasted Land” was selected for the ARTE International Prize (6,000 Euros).
The MONEFF Award, that provides $30,000 of post-production support, went to “Unlosable” by CJ Wang, whose short “Rowboat” received top prize at the Taipei Golden Harvest Awards. Production of “Unlosable” is by Michelle Yeh’s Three Dots Entertainment.
Two awards worth KRW10 million ($8,500) were presented at the newly launched E-IP market. The NEW Creator Award for book to film pitching, went to “Disappeared the Time 4:10,” written by Tchue Jong-lim. The NEW Creator Award for E-IP Pitching was given to animation “The Underdog,” one of the 10 projects pitched at Sunday’s E-IP pitching session.
