‘The Bronze’ Pushed to October to Avoid Summer Comedy Crush (EXCLUSIVE)

The Bronze,” a raunchy comedy about a troubled Olympic gymnast, will try to stick the landing next fall.

Relativity Studios is moving the film from July 10, 2015, when it was slate to debut in limited release, to October 16, 2015. It will once again debut in a limited cluster of theaters before expanding on October 23, 2015.

The studio was concerned that the film would be overshadowed by an onslaught of R-rated summer comedies like “Ted 2,” “Vacation,” and “Spy,” and felt that October was a less competitive time, according to an individual with knowledge. In its new release date, “The Bronze” can steer clear of the over a dozen comedies all vying for audience attention from May through August. There aren’t as many mainstream funny movies this fall, and its new slot is one vacated by “Vacation,” which moved into July.

“The Bronze” will open against the horror thriller “Crimson Peak,” Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies,” and an adaptation of R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps.” It will expand as “Jem and the Holograms,” fantasy adventure “The Last Witch Hunter,” “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension,” the Bill Murray comedy “Rock the Kasbah,” and thriller “The Secret in Their Eyes” all debut.

In its old release date, “The Bronze” would have debuted against “Minions” and the horror film, “The Gallows.” It would have expanded on the same weekend that “Mission:Impossible – Rogue Nation” and “Vacation” opened.

Relativity bought U.S. rights to “The Bronze” out of the Sundance Film Festival for $3 million. The film centers on a washed up gymnast who gets roped into training an up-and-coming athlete. It stars “Big Bang Theory’s” Melissa Rauch, who co-wrote the picture with her husband Winston Rauch, and Sebastian Stan of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” fame. Bryan Buckley directs the picture.
