Box Office: ‘Vacation’ Hits Road With $1.2 Million on Tuesday
“Vacation” has hit the road with an impressive $1.2 million on Tuesday night.
New Line’s raunchy comedy, starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate, expands to 3,250 theaters on Wednesday. “Vacation” has a two-day head start on Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.”
“Vacation” is a sequel to the 1983 original, with the grown-up Rusty Griswold (Helms) taking his own family to the fictional California theme park Walley World. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo return to the franchise as Rusty’s parents while Leslie Mann portrays Rusty’s sister, married to Chris Hemsworth’s newscaster.
“Vacation,” which has received mostly negative reviews, marks the directorial debut of screenwriters Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
Recent projections point to an opening in the $30 million to $35 million range over five days for “Vacation,” which carries a modest $31 million pricetag. That would be in the vicinity of New Line’s 2013 comedy “We’re the Millers,” which also opened on a Wednesday and earned $37 million in its first five days.
The original film, titled “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” opened on the same date 32 years ago and was a major hit with $61 million in U.S. grosses on a $15 million budget.
Paramount is launching “Rogue Nation” at more than 3,800 U.S. locations on Friday. The action adventure, with a hefty $150 million budget, is on pace to open to $40 million.
