Box Office: High-Profile Newcomers Still Falling to ‘Gravity’

Between the two of them, the remake of a 1976 horror classic and a controversial thriller about the founder of Wikileaks couldn’t pull “Gravity” out of its orbit. The space drama is set to earn just north of $30 million in its third weekend in release.

That is only a 28% drop from last weekend, which itself was only 21% off the film’s opening and broke the record for best week-over-week hold for a non-holiday film. With an added $9.1 million from Friday, “Gravity” has cumed $148.6 million to-date domestically.

The success story of “Gravity” sits opposite this weekend’s bomb, Disney and DreamWorks’ “The Fifth Estate,” which is now looking at less than $2 million this frame from 1,769 locations. That will put it in eighth place for the weekend despite ample press — albeit, some of which was negative reviews — and topical subject matter, though evidently not a subject that interests moviegoers.

“Fifth Estate” earned a meager $587,000 Friday.

“Carrie” opened in second Friday with $6.6 million. The MGM and Sony-Screen Gems retread is now expected to earn about $15 million this frame, just beneath the studio’s expectations for $18 million.

In typical horror fashion, Friday was likely “Carrie’s” best showing of the weekend, and it is expected to be unseated by another Sony release, “Captain Phillips.” The pirate drama earned $5.2 million Friday, and is headed toward a $16 million frame.
